Relax in Culdaff Co Donegal

The village of Culdaff is situated in the most northerly region of Ireland, the Inishowen Peninsula in Co. Donegal. An area of outstanding beauty and steeped in history, the picturesque village is set around the village green and pump-house. Dating back to the 8th. century the present village was originally the site of the monastery of St. Buadan.

The present day Church of Ireland stands on the foundations of the old monastic church and the ancient graveyard of Ardmore (opposite Mc Grory's) was also part of the same site.

The village is set on the banks of the Culdaff River which is crossed by two stone bridges that mark the location of the ancient fords that gave Culdaff its name (in Gaelic, Culdaff is "Cul da Ath", corner of the two fords.)

Culdaff has a population of approx. 200 people; contains three pubs, two shops, a hardware store and a post office (for those of a mathematical nature, that's pretty much one pub to every 66 people!) Free from traffic jams with no such thing as a "rush hour", except at closing time, Culdaff is a ideal place to switch off and relax.

For the avid  Angler,
Culdaff Bay provides good boat fishing for cod, pollack, coalfish, haddock, whiting and tope. There is a slipway at Culdaff where small boats can be launched for exploring the inshore fishing around Dunmore Head, where codling, dogfish and gurnard can be expected. Shore angling is under-developed here but anyone with a car and an eye for a good site can hardly fail to find a worthwhile days sport. Pollack, mackerel, wrasse and conger can be expected from the rockiest areas. Some of the best boat fishing in the area is off Glengad Head and Malin Head where cod, ling, pollack, coalfish, gurnard, haddock, spurdog and occasional tope can be expected.
For the shore angler, flounder and dabs are plentiful in the many bays and inlets. Spinning or float fishing from rocky outcrops at Dundaff Head will produce pollack, coalfish, sea trout and wrasse. Lugworm is plentiful on the shores of Malin Bay. Inishowen boating provides daily angling trips from Bunagee pier with prices to suit the individual angler or groups.Trips can be chartered on a daily or weekly basis.

Surfing is a must.............try it out.............
